Naanwich® invades the capital. News Group, Friday, June 23, 2006 Never heard of a Naanwich®? You'd better brush up on your pop-culture because the East Indian-based sandwiches are leading a new wave of fast-food alternatives to McDonald's and Burger King. Featured in articles as far away as BBC News in England, the Naanwich® has a prominent Victoria connection. Sabri Indian Cuisine restaurant – owned by chef Omar Baig – holds the trademark rights to the name Naanwich®. Baig also recently opened Victoria's first Naanwich® restaurant, in the 3000 block of Tillicum Road. A Naanwich® consists of various fillings such as ground lamb, potato and pea wrapped in naan bread. Baig said he originally got the idea when customers would come to his restaurant looking for East Indian-style lunches to take out. “I had a very good response about the food (at the restaurant), especially the naan bread,” Baig said. “But all East Indian food is based on curry and curry is a liquid. And I was thinking how to make it takeout because a lot of people would ask me, ‘Omar, can you make it to go?’ But there was no way I could wrap it with the watery curry; so I created something that I could wrap up in a naan to go.” Another specialty of Baig's is his strict non-processed foods policy. “There is not a lot of Canadian fast-food chains in the market providing non-processed food; so I saw this as a very good avenue to go down.” he said. “I thought if I introduced non-processed foods for take out and fast food that people were going to love it. And it is true. Right now my business is doing great. Sales are eight times more than they were the very first day we opened.” Since he started Sabri Indian Cuisine back in June 1998, Baig has been feeding off a growing popularity for East Indian food. His restaurant has jumped from 24 to 90 seats since opening day, and now Baig is looking at opening five new Naanwich® restaurant branches in Victoria. Baig added he feels he can expand now because he's filling a hole some lunchers are looking to fill. “I didn't tape (customers to the Naanwich® restaurants) remarks, but I can tell you what they said. They said they have been looking for something like this, something where they can eat fresh food, non-processed fast food and get it on the go.” Sabri Naanwich® Restaurant is at 3466 Tillicum Road. It can be reached by phone at 361-9668 or online at http://www.Naanwich.ca or http://www.sabrienterprises.com. | |||||||||||||||
